Week 17 January 12th - 17th 2009

This week we started on our next namely Immigration to the States . Inorder to understand the situation in general we began by looking at the historical background , the different waves of immigrants , when , why , where from , where to . We learnt that the first immigrants arrived at the beginning of the 17th century for trade reasons then others because of religious persecution and others for a better life . People arrived from England , Holland , Germany .... then once they had started their tabacco plantations they had slaves transported to do the manual work .
They had gone to the promised land to establish a new world , one of freedom , equality and equal opportunities .
In the group session one group worked with the assistant on Ellis island and immigration in general whilst the others studied the basics in the English language , with me !

The theme is to be continued next week and don't forget our outing to the cinema to see The Visitor , next Thursday 22nd .
