Whilst the Americans were fighting against each other, and even slightly before , they did also have a problem with the Natives , the Redskins , otherwise the Indians of the country . You can view this in Dance with Wolves , with Kevin Costner . They had pushed the tribes as far west as possible in order to take their hunting land for the pioneers . Fortunately not all ' pale faces ' were against them or tried to take advantage of them .
These films give you some insight into what life must have been like at this period in American history . However if you are really interested you should log into Youtube where you can find episodes from that popular television series The Little House on the Prairie . This is an adaptation of a classic of American children's literature, The Little House Series , written by Laure Ingalls Wilder and published in 1935 which relates her childhood and early adult years in the new , developing states of the west . I am sure you all recognise that name and never realised you were watching history whilst enjoying yourself at the same time !
There is also the series Dr Quinn Medicine Woman which although it was set in Colorado in the late 1860s deals , in certain episodes ,with contraversial issues such as discimination racial , sexual ... current in the 1990s when it was produced .
Now , while the Native Americans and newcomers were struggling for survival in the Far West ,across the Atlantic others were developing many new technologies and at the beginning of the 20 th century the Titanic tried to cross over to the New World , but unfortunately for many of those who had sailed in her the ship struck an iceberg and sunk .

Now let's tackle the Depression with the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck who was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature for his novel about the period between Black Tuesday and the Wall Street Crash in 1929 and the beginning of World War 2 in 1939 . This is the story of a family's suffering .....
