Week 31 Monday May 9th-14th 2011

After a recap on Henry 8th's portrait, by Holbein, we saw, described and interpreted one of Charles 1st by Vandyck. We pulled together the following conclusions:
That the artists painted these portraits to show that the respective Kings , with their chests sticking out, their proud poise, luxurious clothes, proportions, colour and external surroundings
showed them as ABSOLUTE KINGS!

We then looked at the lesson on the organisation of the Monarchy and realised that their power was weakened by that of Parliament, of which the members had the right to levy taxes. The King himself had to pass by these same people to have the right to wage war, or whatever else he might want to do with the money raised! It was and is a known fact that the King could dissolve Parliament but without the same Parliament he was nothing, money-wise atleast!!!!

We will continue talking about the Royal Capacity next week.
